How the Barometer is calculated.

Each category adds pressure to the overall barometer. Each story in a category counts for either 2.5 or 5 points until the maximum is reached for that category.

The numbers don’t steadily increase every year but there is an upward trend and there seems to be twice as many total worldwide earthquakes now as there was almost 20 years ago. Although some of this may be attributable to the increased monitoring of earthquakes, I wouldn’t be sure that all is attributable to that fact.

Allegorically the number of earthquakes that are occurring in populated areas seems to be increasing. We are able to list several moderate or larger size earthquakes almost everyday on the website.
